This is a rundown of my Top Five matches from the month of January from the world of pro wrestling.   5.King Cuerno Vs Fenix (Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 1)

Lucha Underground started their second season with a bang, this match kicked the season off and set the tone. Fenix defended the Gift Of The Gods title against the hunter King Cuerno. Fenix hit plenty of high risk moves in this match but the strength and power of Cuerno was too much as he connected with a package Piledriver and he gained the Gift Of The Gods title and a chance at the Lucha Underground Championship.

4.Kevin Owens Vs Dean Ambrose (WWE Royal Rumble)

Easily the match of the night at the Royal Rumble for the Intercontinental Championship, it was brutal and showed how good both Ambrose and Owens are. It included tables, chairs and steel steps used as weapons with the winner being the last man left standing. Dean Ambrose retained his title pushing Kevin Owens from the top turnbuckle and through tables stacked up on the outside, Owens could not get to his feet before the 10 count.

3.Chris Renfrew Vs Grado (ICW Square Go)

This match had been brewing for a few weeks prior to the Square Go and both Grado and Renfrew did not disappoint, neither held back and it didn’t take long for the weapons to come in to play. Grado was bust open with a Singapore cane but then emptied drawing pins out of his bumbag and Rock Bottomed Renfrew onto them leaving both men looking like pin cushions. Renfrew then pulled a board covered in barbed wire in the ring but Grado reversed and put the challenger through the board. But a lapse in concentration from the champion saw Renfrew hit a Stone Cold Stoner and win the ICW World Championship.

2.AJ Styles Vs Shinsuke Nakamura (NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 10)

This match pitted two of today greatest wrestlers and it lived up to the hype. Every move was executed perfectly and each men focused on body parts, AJ going for the calf and Nakamura the back. Styles managed to hit all his signature moves but Shinsuke would not stay down, AJ went for a top rope Styles Clash but Nakamura escaped and hit two Boma Ye knee strikes on the challenger for his IWGP Intercontinental Title and retained his belt. This match was incredible and both men acknowledged one another’s effort, here’s hoping we get to see this again in WWE.

1.Katsuyori Shibata Vs Tomohiro Ishii (NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 10)

If you have not seen this match drop whatever plans you have made and find this online to watch. Ishii put his NEVER Openweight Title on the line against his challenger Shibata in this super heavy hitting contest. At one point they took it turns to strike each other with neither letting up that each strike was having any effect on them. If you love seeing two men just beat the living hell out of each other then this one is for you as these two did not hold back. Shibata hit a brutal running penalty kick to the head of the champion Ishii and won his first NJPW championship in his career.
